Terrestrial Digital TV Aerials

To receive terrestrial digital television, you will need either a digital television or a Freeview set-top box to convert your existing analogue television. You may also need to replace your existing aerial or your landlord might have to upgrade the communal aerial. Although an audio description service is being broadcast, it can only be received on terrestrial television using certain equipment. If this service is important to you, make sure you buy a set-top box or digital television that can receive the audio description.

Satellite TV Dishes

For satellite digital television, an installer would normally visit your home to fit a satellite dish, or you may have access to a communal dish. You also need a satellite receiver box, but this is usually provided by the installer. The satellite receiver box turns your existing television into a digital TV. Most, though not all, homes are within coverage of the satellite, but you may not be able to put up a dish because of planning regulations or your tenancy agreement. All satellite receivers can receive the audio description service, but do tell them when you are ordering that you want the installer to explain the service to you.

Ask the cable company about your interest in audio description at the time of ordering.
